"Melt" (One Day Spotify Event)2016
“Born and raised in Miami, Florida and spending a lot of his childhood in/around the ocean, the idea of climate change literally hits home for Artist Ivan Toth Depeña. Most of his family still lives in south Florida and based on the scientific data, their homes will be completely underwater within the next century. Depeña jumped at the chance to create a temporary installation for Spotify’s “Clarify” event that considers this very important social and environmental issue. On Tuesday, October 17th, the artist will install a scaled down neighborhood made of ice on the 7th floor of the parking lot at 1111 Lincoln Road. Over the course of the day, the ice will melt and the houses will disappear. A fitting site, the parking lot will host the installation and poignantly reflect on our carbon footprint, creating a reflection of how fragile our time on this planet actually is.”
“Clarify” is a series of videos, exhibitions and conversations presented by Spotify that explore the connection between music, art, and politics. Leading up to the November 2016 election, Clarify is hosting 8 exhibitions in 8 cities around the US, each one taking on one of today’s key political issues. The goal is to clarify key issues and encourage people to get out and vote. You can check out the online portion of the Clarify series here, produced in partnership with Mic.com.
